Manny Pacquiao Announces Comeback Fight vs. Mario Barrios
Manny Pacquiao, the legendary boxer, has announced his return to the ring. Pacquiao, 46, will face WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios on July 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
“I’m back,” Pacquiao posted on X. ”On July 19, I return to the ring to face WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Let’s make history!”
Confirmation of the bout was put on hold while Pacquiao ran for a Senate seat in the Philippines. He previously served as a senator from 2016 to 2022 but conceded the race on May 14 after finishing 13th.
Pacquiao’s career saw him win world titles in eight weight classes, a first in boxing history. His rivalry with Floyd Mayweather included years of negotiations before their 2015 fight, which mayweather won.
Despite the loss to Mayweather, Pacquiao secured two more world titles before retiring after losing his WBA welterweight title to Yordenis Ugás in August 2021.
As the Ugás fight, rumors of a Pacquiao return have circulated, frequently enough mentioning barrios as a potential opponent. Pacquiao has participated in exhibition fights, including a recent bout against Rukiya Anpo.
Barrios, 29, became the WBC interim welterweight champion after defeating Fabian Maidana in May 2024. He was later promoted to full champion when Terence Crawford moved up in weight.
Barrios defended his title in November with a draw against Abel Ramos. He previously lost to Gervonta “Tank” Davis in June 2021.
