“We bought her to go jumping, but she showed such promise on the flat that we switched gears,” Magee explained. “She’s won seven races now and has been incredibly consistent. Running on the flat is easier on the horses, and the prize money is better.”

Magee’s success has led to a strategic shift in his training approach. With the cost of acquiring jump horses skyrocketing—often reaching €30,000 to €40,000 for unbroken three-year-olds—he has turned his focus to flat racing.

“Flat yearlings are cheaper, and the turnover is quicker,” Magee said. “If they’re not fast enough for the flat, you can still transition them to jumping. It’s a more flexible approach.”

This pivot has paid off. In the 2024/25 jumps season, Magee’s stable has operated at a remarkable 33% strike rate, with six runners yielding two wins. His flat horses have also shone, with four of the five yearlings he purchased two years ago already notching victories.

Despite the challenges of competing against racing’s elite, Magee remains undeterred. “When you’re up against the likes of Aidan O’Brien, your standards have to be sky-high,” he said. “But you have to take them on. That’s the game.”
