Padres’ Jackson Merrill to Injured List After Concussion

PHOENIX — The San diego Padres have placed All-Star outfielder Jackson merrill on the seven-day injured list following a concussion sustained Saturday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The injury occurred during a stolen base attempt in the seventh inning.
Merrill,22,slid headfirst into second base,where he was tagged out by Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte. The tag made contact with Merrill’s helmet, and he remained down on the field for several minutes before being helped off. Brandon Lockridge replaced him in the outfield.
This season, Merrill is batting.304 with five home runs. Last year,he finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting and ninth in NL MVP voting,hitting 24 home runs,driving in 90 runs,and posting a .292 average.
To fill Merrill’s roster spot, the Padres called up 29-year-old Trenton Brooks from Triple-A El Paso. brooks was batting .311 with 14 home runs and 54 RBIs for El Paso. He previously played for the San Francisco Giants last year, hitting .120 in 25 at-bats.
