Paige Bueckers enters concussion protocol, to miss games
Dallas Wings rookie Paige Bueckers, the highly touted No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, has been placed in the league’s concussion protocol. The team announced Friday that Bueckers will miss at least two upcoming games as a result.
Bueckers is set to sit out the Wings’ game against the Chicago Sky on May 31 and their June 3 matchup with the Seattle Storm. Her earliest possible return would be June 6, when Dallas hosts the Los Angeles Sparks.
Wings coach Chris Koclanes said Bueckers reported a headache after Thursday’s game against the Sky and mentioned taking multiple hits during the game. The team instantly consulted with a doctor.
The potential concussion may have occurred late in the first half of Thursday’s game. Bueckers appeared to collide heads with Chicago’s Courtney Vandersloot while pursuing an offensive rebound. Even though a foul was called on Vandersloot, Bueckers remained in the game, playing a total of 36 minutes.
Despite the possible injury, Bueckers had a strong performance against the Sky, scoring 15 points, grabbing five rebounds, dishing out eight assists, and recording three steals and three blocks.
After a slow start to her WNBA career, the Dallas Wings’ Paige Bueckers has demonstrated why she was the top pick, showcasing her skills as one of the league’s most promising rookies. Through her first six games, Bueckers is averaging 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 6.7 assists. She ranks fifth in the WNBA in assists and is among the top rookies in multiple statistical categories.
Earlier in May,Bueckers made WNBA history in a win against the Connecticut Sun,becoming the first rookie since 2005 to record at least 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists while shooting 80% or better from the field. She is also the only player in WNBA history to accumulate at least 80 points and 40 assists in her first six career games.
The concussion comes at an unfortunate time for the Wings, who are currently struggling with a 1-5 record despite high expectations entering the season. The team made several acquisitions in the offseason, including Dijons Carrington, NaLyssa Smith, Tyasha Harris, and Myisha Hines-Allen, and hired Chris Koclanes as their new coach.
“You know, she didn’t really say anything. And then yesterday, after the game, she said she was feeling like she had a headache,” Wings coach Chris Koclanes said.
What’s next
The Dallas Wings will monitor Paige Bueckers’ condition closely as she undergoes concussion protocol. The team hopes for a swift recovery as they navigate upcoming games against the Sky, Storm, and Sparks.
