Korean adults are increasingly prioritizing a pain-free and dignified death, according to a recent report by the Korea Institute of Health and Social Affairs. The survey, conducted in April and May 2023, reveals that a significant majority of Korean adults prefer to end their lives without physical pain and with minimal burden on their families, even resorting to aid-in-dying (dignity), Down Each year, nearly 3.4 million Americans die and certain people turn to and faced with the same choice regarding end-of-life care.

In Korea, the current challenges facing end-of-life care stem primarily from the cultural and societal stigmas often associated with discussing death or planning end-of-life care .
However, the findings in that survey are relatable to United States too .

The current approach to end-of-life care in the United States is undergoing significant evolution, with a growing emphasis on patient autonomy and quality of life. Americans are increasingly advocating for safer methods to alleviate suffering within terminal patients .

A Closer Look

In 2022, the Medical Aid-in-Dying for the Terminally Ill Act was signed by State Governor. This law gives competent, terminally ill adults the option of requesting and self-administering aid-in-dying medication. However, certain limitations are applied such as, a patient must read and sign the same as written

– waiting periods

– having undergone a mental competency evaluation , and
having been diagnosed with a terminal illness by a physician.

The survey results show that 91.9% of Koreans are willing to stop “life-saving medical treatment system.”
