Pakistan‘s Black Market Thrives Despite Crackdown as Rupee Weakens

Islamabad: Despite a⁤ recent government crackdown aimed at curbing the black market for foreign currency, informal trading continues to flourish in Pakistan, with dealers and buyers finding ⁢new, discreet channels to operate. The⁤ Pakistani rupee has seen⁢ a slight recovery,⁣ firming from 288.6 per dollar⁤ on July 19 ‍to about 286⁣ in recent sessions. However,traders and bankers suggest these effects could be short-lived as the underlying demand and the allure of bypassing‍ official channels persist.

The black market, operating outside official regulatory frameworks, encompasses unlicensed dealers, personal networks, and digital peer-to-peer exchanges. Customers are drawn to these ‍informal avenues to avoid⁢ tax declarations,circumvent ⁣cumbersome paperwork,and bypass official limits ⁢on currency purchases.In Peshawar, a city historically known for its black market currency dealings, many shops in the Chowk Yadgar district have been shuttered.yet,some traders continue ⁣to operate discreetly from back-alley booths.”The trade didn’t stop.It just moved,” explained Ahmad, a dealer whose family has been involved in the business ⁣for generations. “Now it’s on WhatsApp. If you no someone, the dollars come⁤ to your house.”

Another trader, Gul, echoed this sentiment, stating, “The big players have shifted to ⁢safer locations and kept going.” Both traders requested anonymity ‍to protect their identities.The informal‍ market’s appeal extends to retail buyers as well.⁤ Hassan, a manager at a multinational firm in karachi, shared his experience of turning to an informal forex chat due to stricter documentation requirements in the formal market. “Everyone ther is a buyer or seller. No middleman,no commission.Sometimes it’s physical cash, sometimes bank transfers, sometimes ⁣crypto,” he⁢ said.

Stricter FX⁣ Discipline

In ‍an effort to stabilize the rupee, the State Bank of Pakistan convened a meeting with bank treasury heads on Monday. Bankers present‍ at ⁣the‍ meeting indicated they were instructed to cease purchasing dollars from exchange companies⁣ at rates exceeding the ⁤official price, a ⁢practise deemed to be‍ distorting the market.

Banks were‍ advised to rely on their own⁤ inflows from ⁤exports and remittances. However, both these sources have⁤ experienced a slowdown. exporters are reportedly delaying repatriating their earnings, anticipating a further weakening of the rupee. Similarly,remittances are tapering off⁣ as ‍banks reduce the incentives previously offered to attract⁤ overseas inflows.

authorities have also⁢ urged banks to maintain a narrow gap between the interbank and open⁤ market exchange rates. ⁣This measure is a condition of Pakistan’s ⁤$7 billion International Monetary fund (IMF) deal, designed to discourage speculative activities. “These meetings have been happening for years, but this⁤ one was more pointed,” ‍one banker commented, speaking on‍ condition of anonymity.

The central bank is expected ⁤to announce interest ⁣rate cuts on Wednesday. While this ⁢move aims to ease inflation, it carries the risk of exerting further pressure on the rupee.
