Pakistan Extends BDS Program to 5 Years: A New Standard in Dental Education

Pakistan Extends BDS Program to 5 Years: A New Standard in Dental Education

November 30, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) has officially announced that the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program will extend from four years to five years. This new policy will take effect starting from the academic year 2024-2025.

PM&DC President Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj stated that this change addresses the difficulties Pakistani BDS graduates face in finding jobs and training internationally. Many countries require a five-year BDS degree for employment.

The updated program will include a fifth year, which will serve as a clerkship year, followed by a one-year structured house job or foundation year and internship. The additional year will provide students with a more thorough understanding of dental sciences, strengthening their academic foundation.

‌What are the‌ key benefits of extending the Bachelor of dental surgery (BDS) programme from four to five years for dental graduates⁢ in Pakistan?

Interview with Professor Dr. Rizwan Taj, President of the Pakistan Medical‍ and Dental Council (PM&DC)

Interviewer: Thank you, Professor Taj, ⁢for joining us today to discuss the recent proclamation regarding the⁣ Bachelor of Dental Surgery ⁤(BDS) program. The decision to extend the program ‍from four to five years is significant. What prompted this change?

Prof.Dr. Rizwan Taj: Thank you for having me. The primary reason for extending the⁤ BDS⁢ program to five years is to address the challenges faced by our ‌graduates ‌in securing employment and training opportunities internationally. Many countries have established standards⁢ that require a five-year BDS degree, which has created a gap for our graduates in the global job market.this change is about enhancing the employability and international recognition of Pakistani dental professionals.

interviewer: Can you elaborate on the structure of the ⁢new program and what students can expect from the additional year?

Prof. Dr. Rizwan taj: certainly. The additional year will serve‍ as a clerkship year, allowing ⁣students to⁤ engage in practical, hands-on learning experiences in clinical settings. This is crucial for their progress as practitioners. Following the clerkship, students will complete a structured house‍ job or ‌foundation year and an‌ internship. This complete approach will equip graduates with a deeper understanding of dental sciences and better prepare them for the demands of the profession.

Interviewer: How⁤ do you believe this change will ⁣affect the quality of dental education in Pakistan?

Prof. Dr.Rizwan Taj: By extending the‌ BDS program, we are directly enhancing the quality of dental ⁤education in Pakistan. The comprehensive ⁤curriculum we’ve developed aims to align our education system with global standards. We believe that ⁤by providing additional training and practical experiences, we can produce graduates who are not onyl knowledgeable but also competent and ‌capable of delivering high-quality ‍dental care.

Interviewer: When will ⁢these changes take effect, and how will they be ⁣implemented across dental colleges in Pakistan?

Prof. ⁣Dr. Rizwan ‌Taj: The new policy will officially take effect from the academic year 2024-2025. We have already finalized comprehensive⁤ curriculum guidelines, ‌which will be shared with dental colleges soon. We are committed to ensuring ‍a smooth transition for both current and incoming students, and we will provide the necessary support⁢ and resources to facilitate this change.

Interviewer: In‍ your opinion, how important is it for Pakistan ‍to⁣ align its dental education with international standards?

Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj: It is indeed absolutely vital. In today’s interconnected world, our graduates must be able to compete ⁤on ‍a‌ global stage. Aligning our dental education ⁢with international standards not only enhances the credibility of our programs but also opens up opportunities for our students to work abroad. Ultimately, this change is about fostering a stronger dental workforce that can contribute to both local and global health outcomes.

Interviewer: Thank you, Professor Taj, for sharing your insights on this important development in dental education.

Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj: ⁤Thank you for having me. I look forward to seeing the positive impact of these changes on our graduates and the profession as a whole.

This decision aims to align Pakistan’s dental education system with global standards, improving the international recognition of Pakistani dental graduates.

The PM&DC has finalized comprehensive curriculum guidelines, which will be shared with dental colleges soon.
