Pakistan International Airlines Aims to Restart Europe Flights After Ban Lifted
Pakistan International Airlines Aims for UK Return After Four-Year Ban
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is soaring towards a comeback in Europe, with plans to resume flights to the UK after a four-year ban. The move follows the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) lifting its suspension on the airline, citing “restored confidence” in Pakistan’s aviation authority.
The ban, imposed in 2020 following the tragic crash of PIA flight 8303 that claimed 97 lives, grounded PIA’s fleet of 34 planes from operating in Europe. While EASA has cleared the way for PIA’s return, UK authorities have yet to grant permission for landings in London, Manchester, and Birmingham.
“While we therefore support the restoration of such connections as soon as practicable, the circumstances that led to the suspension of those services require a rigorous safety case to be demonstrated first,” the UK’s civil Aviation Authority (CAA) stated.
PIA CEO Amir Hayat expressed his elation in a video posted on X/Twitter, stating, “Today is a very important day for us in which we have made a very important commitment. We have at this time achieved success on PIA flights from Europe.”
Before the crash, PIA offered seven direct routes between Pakistan and the UK, connecting major cities like London, Karachi, Lahore, and Sialkot. The airline aims to resume flights to Europe, starting with Paris, within the next three to four weeks.
The lifting of the ban comes as a welcome relief for PIA, which estimated annual revenue losses of 40 billion rupees (£372 million) due to the suspension. the Pakistani government is currently planning to sell a 60% stake in the carrier, hoping the resumption of European flights will boost its value.
PIA spokesman Abdullah Hafeez Khan told Reuters, “PIA plans to approach the UK’s Department for Transport (DfT) for UK route resumption, as EASA clearance is a prerequisite for their decision.”
Khan added, “With Europe now and upcoming UK routes, we anticipate increased revenue potential and hence a rise in PIA’s value during the privatisation process.”
