pakistan Cricket Board Eases T20 League Participation Rules
Updated May 27, 2025
The pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has considerably revised its policy regarding player participation in T20 leagues. Contracted players, both internationally and domestically, can now participate in a maximum of four T20 leagues annually, including the Pakistan Super League (PSL). This decision marks a major shift from the previous regulations introduced in 2018.
The old policy had restricted players from freely participating in various leagues, leading to discontent. Players often faced uncertainty, with NOCs (No Objection Certificates) sometimes revoked mid-tournament for national duties. This new ruling aims to provide more opportunities for players to enhance their skills and increase their T20 earnings.
Wasim Khan, the PCB chief executive officer, emphasized the balance achieved with the new policy. “I think this is a flexible, balanced and complete NOC policy which addresses as many of the likely scenarios that we will face,” Khan said. “We have given primacy and importance to player workload, international and domestic commitments, but simultaneously occurring it was critically important that players are given the opportunities to make additional earnings and develop their skills around the world.”
For the 19 nationally contracted players, NOCs will be processed through the International Cricket Operations department, requiring approval from the head coach or team management to assess workload and commitments. The PCB chief executive will have final approval. Domestic players must frist obtain consent from their provincial associations before their cases are reviewed by the Cricket Operations department. White-ball regulars who do not play red-ball cricket must commit to domestic 50-over and 20-over competitions to be eligible for NOCs.
A key change addresses NOCs for retired players. The PCB will now automatically issue NOCs to players who have been retired for at least 24 months, unless compelling reasons exist, which will be provided in writing.
khan expressed optimism about the policy’s clarity and understanding among stakeholders. “I am optimistic that moving forward, all the relevant stakeholders will have clarity and a better understanding of the process,” Khan said. he added that NOCs, once granted, will only be revoked due to injury concerns or international/domestic playing obligations.
What’s next
The PCB hopes the updated policy will foster better relationships with cricket boards worldwide, ensuring smooth player participation in international and domestic events while allowing them to explore T20 league opportunities.
