MANILA, Philippines – Justice Mariflor Punzalan-Castillo officially took her oath as the new Ombudsman before Executive Secretary Lucas bersamin on July 28, 2025. Her appointment fills a crucial role in the nation’s fight against graft and corruption.
However, the search for a permanent successor to the outgoing Ombudsman, who is nearing the end of their term, is still underway.Executive Secretary Bersamin confirmed that the Judicial Bar Council (JBC) has not yet released a shortlist of candidates for the position.
“No shortlist from the JBC. Interviews of the aspirants by the JBC are yet to begin after the SONA (State of the Nation Address),” Bersamin stated.
The upcoming interviews are a critical step in the selection process, which will ultimately lead to a proposal for the President.

Among the 17 individuals who have applied for the esteemed position of Ombudsman, several prominent figures have thrown their hats into the ring. These include:
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla: A key figure in the current administration’s legal team.
Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Gaerlan: Bringing extensive judicial experience to the table.
Former Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares: Known for her expertise in fiscal matters and tax administration.
Philippine Competition Commission Chairman Michael Aguinaldo: Wiht a background in regulatory and competition law.
These candidates represent a diverse range of expertise and experience, all vying for a role that is central to upholding accountability in public service.
The Judicial Bar Council’s Crucial Role
The eight-member JBC is tasked with the rigorous screening of all applicants. This process involves evaluating their qualifications, integrity, and suitability for the demanding role of ombudsman. Following the interviews, the JBC will compile a shortlist of the most qualified candidates, which will then be forwarded to the President for the final appointment.
