Palace Walls Turned Canvas: Foreign Tourists Leave Their Mark, But at What Cost
Çırağan Palace’s Neglect Raises Concerns Among Citizens and Tourists
The historic marble path connecting Yıldız Palace and Çırağan Palace in Beşiktaş has become a focal point of attention due to its state of neglect. Visitors to the area have been seen writing dates, names, poems, and social media accounts on the gate and its surroundings, while graffiti has also been painted and engraved on the structure.
The building, which features magnificent columns and engravings reflecting the architecture of the 19th century, has been found to have cracks in its marble and columns. This issue has been ongoing for a long time, with the problem of destruction previously making headlines.
Archaeologist Ömer Faruk Yavaşçay has examined the structure and emphasized its historical and touristic significance. He stressed the need for security cameras to be installed around the area to prevent vandalism and protect the site.
Yavaşçay also highlighted the need for restoration work to be carried out on the building, which is approximately 150 years old. He suggested that special lighting and landscaping could be used to improve the site and enhance its historical charm.
Preserving Historical Landmarks
The neglect of Çırağan Palace’s marble path serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving historical landmarks. These sites not only hold cultural and historical significance but also attract tourists and contribute to the local economy.
Efforts to protect and restore these sites are crucial in maintaining their integrity and ensuring that they continue to be appreciated by future generations.
