Palestine Talks Fail Without Palestinian Voices – FM Fidan
Palestine’s Voice Must Be Heard: Visa Denials Spark Diplomatic Push at UN
Ankara, Turkey – The cancellation of visas for Palestinian officials, including President Mahmoud Abbas, ahead of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York has ignited a flurry of diplomatic activity, with Turkey at the forefront of efforts to ensure Palestine’s voice is not silenced.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan addressed the situation Friday, emphasizing that “Palestine cannot be left out of discussions on its own future.” His remarks, delivered at the Turkish Press Federation in Ankara, underscored the sensitivity of the issue adn Turkey’s commitment to finding a solution.
The visa denials threatened to derail a planned conference on Palestine at the UN, an initiative supported by Turkey and aimed at addressing current issues facing the region. Fidan clarified that while Palestine has a permanent mission at the UN and can be represented at the General Assembly, President Abbas’s absence would be a critically important blow.
“From the very first day, we have been working very intensively,” Fidan stated, highlighting the urgency with which Turkey has approached the situation.
President Erdoğan has instructed the Foreign Ministry to explore option measures and options to ensure Palestinian depiction at the UN. Fidan revealed that extensive consultations have taken place with Palestine, Saudi Arabia, egypt, Qatar, Jordan, and Oman.
Despite the setback, Fidan emphasized the unwavering commitment of Palestinian leaders to ensuring the New York program proceeds and that activities related to the recognition of the State of Palestine continue.
“Our Palestinian brothers, in particular, are committed to ensuring that this program in New York is not disrupted and that activities related to the recognition of the State of Palestine can take place,” Fidan said.
Interestingly, the focus has shifted towards a longer-term goal: securing recognition of the State of Palestine, particularly from permanent members of the Security Council like France and the U.K. Fidan noted that several major Western countries, including France and Belgium, have indicated they will take steps toward recognizing Palestine as a state.
“They see this as a priority benefit for the Palestinian cause,” fidan explained, adding that neighboring arab countries, while critical of the visa denials, believe that recognition by other actors holds greater long-term value.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation-Arab League Contact Group swiftly condemned the visa denials, calling for their correction. However, the current focus appears to be on leveraging the situation to advance the cause of Palestinian statehood on the international stage.
Turkey’s proactive role in navigating this complex situation underscores its commitment to finding a just and lasting solution for the Palestinian people, ensuring their voice is heard and their aspirations for statehood are realized. the coming weeks will be crucial as diplomatic efforts intensify in New York and beyond.
