Seven sick Palestinian children and 29 family members arrived in Dublin on Saturday, December 20, 2024, for medical treatment, following government approval in September 2023.
Background and Evacuation
The evacuation is part of IrelandS response too a September 2023 appeal from the World Health Organization (WHO) to address the critical health needs of individuals in Gaza. This marks the third medical evacuation facilitated by the Irish government.
The children, suffering from various illnesses and injuries, were transported to Dublin for specialized care unavailable in Gaza due to the ongoing conflict. Prior to travel, all patients and carers underwent health screening.
Support Services for Patients and carers
The Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) hospital is leading the medical care.CHI will provide dedicated e-worker and translation services to ensure patients and their families receive complete support and assistance in accessing necessary services.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) will conduct appropriate psycho-social assessments for both patients and their carers, recognizing the trauma experienced.
CHI’s Role and Response
Lucy Nugent, Chief Executive Officer of CHI, described the mission as a “real privilege” for the CHI team. She emphasized the meaningful and emotional impact of helping children from gaza, noting that staff are involved with the families from the very beginning of the process.
Ongoing Conflict and Healthcare Crisis in Gaza
The evacuation underscores the dire healthcare situation in Gaza, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict between israel and Hamas. The United Nations reports that the healthcare system in Gaza is on the verge of collapse, with hospitals overwhelmed and lacking essential supplies.
The conflict has resulted in a notable number of casualties and injuries, placing immense strain on the already fragile healthcare infrastructure.Access to medical care is severely limited, and many patients are unable to receive the treatment they need.
