UM Surabaya Graduate Sondos Shnewra Receives Honors Amidst Gaza Conflict

Sondos Jehad Shnewra, a Palestinian student, graduated cum laude from the University of Muhammadiyah Surabaya (UMSurabaya) on Saturday, October 25, 2024. His academic achievement occurred against the backdrop of ongoing conflict in Gaza, where his family remains.
Shnewra described UMSurabaya as more than just an educational institution, but a “second home” where he built a strong network of friends and family from diverse national backgrounds. He emphasized the importance of the human and Islamic values he cultivated during his studies.
Scholarship and Family Support
shnewra’s studies were made possible through a scholarship from Lazismu East Java, a humanitarian institution. This scholarship enabled him to pursue a Master’s degree in his chosen field. his parents strongly supported his decision to study in Indonesia, citing the country’s reputation for safety and its consistent solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The past two years presented significant challenges for Shnewra.While completing his final assignments in Surabaya,he simultaneously worried about his family’s safety amidst the escalating conflict in Gaza. He credited the prayers and support of his friends and lecturers at UMSurabaya with providing him strength during this difficult time.
“I ask for prayers for my family who are still in Palestine,” Shnewra said. “I am grateful that Allah has given me good friends who always pray for me.”
Gratitude and Future Aspirations
Shnewra expressed profound gratitude to UMSurabaya and Lazismu for the scholarship opportunity, viewing it as a symbol of Indonesian solidarity and concern for Palestine. He believes the assistance extended beyond simply providing education, representing “hope and brotherhood between nations.”
Looking ahead, Shnewra hopes to build a peaceful life and secure meaningful employment. “I want to make a good name in Indonesia as a Palestinian who has received great opportunities from this nation,” he stated. He aims to contribute positively to Indonesian society and represent the strong ties between Palestine and Indonesia.
