A Return to Roots for a Veteran Player
After fifteen years, luke Palyza, a native of Ostrava adn a product of the city’s basketball program, is returning to his hometown club. The 35-year-old wingman brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to the NH Ostrava team, having most recently played in Iceland with Alftanes, helping them reach the semifinals.
Palyza’s journey has taken him across Europe, beginning with a departure from Ostrava in the 2010/2011 season to join Nymburk. With Nymburk,he secured three championship titles before continuing his career with Prostějov,Děčín,and Olomouc. A second stint with Nymburk from 2020/2021 yielded another three championship wins, solidifying his status as one of the Czech republic’s most decorated players.
His international experience includes participation in the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2021 and the World Championship in China in 2019. Prior to his time in Iceland, Palyza also played professionally in Germany (Bayreuth), Poland (Gliwice), Scotland (Caledonia Gladiators).”Greetings to all Ostrava fans.I look forward to playing at home for the next seasons in the Ostrava jersey,” Palyza stated after signing his contract.
A Boost in Experience and Leadership
The return of palyza isn’t the only homecoming for Ostrava. Adam Číž, another former player, is also rejoining the team, bringing with him a wealth of experience. Číž is preparing for his seventeenth season in the Czech first league, having previously played seven seasons with Ostrava, nine with Cologne, and stints with Svitavy and Ústí nad Labem. He was named the league’s most valuable player in the 2020/2021 season.
Coach Choleva emphasized the importance of Číž’s experience, stating, “With Adam Číž, we have experience in team management that will be essential for our game.” The coach also highlighted Palyza’s qualities, describing him as “a grate professional with huge experience, quality shooting and a cool head in key moments.”
New Faces Join the Roster
Beyond the returning veterans, NH Ostrava has added several new players to its roster. The team welcomes 17-year-old Slovak Matej Koza, 24-year-old American Keenon Cole, 211cm Canadian Julian roche, and USA player lynn Greer III.
coach Choleva outlined the expected contributions of the new additions: ”Greer will bring energy, speed and strength to one-on-one play on the perimeter, Roche will provide strength, hardness and rebounding under the basket, and we expect contributions from everyone.”
Ambitious Goals for the Upcoming Season
The upcoming NBL season is set to begin on Sunday, September 28th, with Huť Ostrava playing its first game in Písek. Coach Choleva has set ambitious goals for the team. “We wont to play a style that will entertain fans and bring results,” he said. “I expect to be a team that othre teams will be afraid of. The goal must be the playoffs and avoiding Nymburk in the first round.”
