Strongest September in Four years
Spain’s labor market continued its positive trend in September 2024, adding 31,500 jobs – the highest number for the month in the last four years. This figure excludes 2020 and 2021, which were substantially impacted by the post-pandemic economic recovery.
As of September 30,2024,Social Security records show 21,697,665 registered affiliates,an increase of half a million compared to the same period last year. Together, the number of individuals registered as unemployed fell to 2,421,665, the lowest level since 2007, representing a decrease of 4,846 registered unemployed individuals.
Education Sector Drives growth
The primary driver of this September increase was the education sector, with the start of the school year generating 63,983 new jobs. This surge partially offset seasonal declines in other sectors following the summer tourism season.
Sectoral Shifts and Seasonal Adjustments
While education saw substantial gains, the hospitality sector experienced a loss of 45,515 jobs, and trade saw a decrease of 34,529 positions. Public governance also experienced a reduction of 10,410 jobs, and health and social services saw a decline of 6,177 positions.
The decrease in health and social services employment is largely attributable to the expiration of temporary contracts used to cover staff vacations during the peak summer months.
