Panama Complains to UN Over Trump’s Threat to Seize Panama Canal

Pemerintah Panama mengajukan keluhan kepada Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa (PBB) soal ancaman “mengkhawatirkan” dari Presiden Amerika Serikat (AS) Donald Trump untuk merebut Terusan Panama. Keluhan itu disampaikan otoritas Panama kepada Sekretaris Jenderal PBB Antonio Guterres.

Dalam suratnya, seperti dilansir AFP, Rabu (22/1/2025), pemerintah di Panama City merujuk pada salah satu pasal dalam Piagam PBB yang melarang setiap negara anggota untuk “memberikan ancaman atau menggunakan kekerasan” terhadap integritas teritorial atau kemerdekaan politik negara lain.

Surat resmi tersebut, yang dibagikan kepada wartawan pada Selasa (21/1) waktu setempat, mendesak Guterres untuk merujuk persoalan itu kepada Dewan Keamanan PBB, namun tanpa meminta diadakannya pertemuan.

Trump, dalam pidato pelantikannya pada Senin (20/1), mengulangi kembali tuduhannya soal China secara efektif “mengoperasikan” Terusan Panama melalui kehadirannya yang semakin besar di sekitar jalur perairan tersebut, yang diserahkan oleh AS pada akhir tahun 1999 silam.

“Kita tidak memberikannya kepada China, kita memberikannya kepada Panama. Dan kita mengambilnya kembali,” cetus Trump dalam pidatonya.

Presiden Panama, Jose Raul Mulino, membantah adanya negara lain yang melakukan campur tangan dalam mengelola Terusan Panama. Dia menyebut terusan itu dioperasikan berdasarkan prinsip netralitas.

“Terusan ini adalah dan akan tetap menjadi milik Panama,” tegas Mulino saat menanggapi ancaman Trump.
