Panama Golden Visa: A Fast Track to Residency for Investors
Panama’s Qualified Investor Program, widely known as the Panama Golden Visa, continues to attract foreign nationals seeking a streamlined path to residency through investment. The program offers a variety of investment options, ranging from real estate to stock market participation and bank deposits, designed to bolster Panama’s economy while providing benefits to investors.
The program’s appeal lies in its efficiency. Approvals can be granted in as little as 30 days, and applicants are not required to reside full-time in Panama. This flexibility, combined with the potential for eventual citizenship, makes it a compelling option for individuals looking to diversify their portfolios and establish a foothold in Latin America.
Why Panama Introduced the Program
Panama introduced the Qualified Investor Program to attract high-quality foreign investment and solidify its position as a global business hub. Government officials aim to receive around 150 applications per month in 2026, a significant increase from the approximately 25 applications processed monthly in previous years. This demonstrates strong institutional support and suggests continued expansion and evolution of the program.
Investment Options and Requirements
To qualify for permanent residency under the program, applicants must choose one of three investment routes:
1. Qualified Investor
This route requires a minimum investment held for at least five years to maintain permanent residency status. Investors can choose from:
- A real estate investment of USD 300,000
- A stock exchange investment of USD 500,000
- A fixed-term deposit of USD 750,000 in the banking sector
Investments can be made personally, through a corporation where the investor holds 100% of the shares, or through a Panama Private Interest Foundation with the investor as the ultimate beneficiary. Funds must originate from banks outside of Panama.
2. Forestry Investor
This option involves investment in a company with a forest registry with the Ministry of Environment. Two options are available:
- An investment of USD 100,000 in teak reforestation, granting two years of temporary residence, followed by eligibility to apply for permanent residency.
- An investment of USD 350,000 in teak reforestation, granting immediate permanent residency.
3. Friendly Nations
Citizens of designated “friendly nations” benefit from reduced investment thresholds. As of February 17, 2026, these nations include Andorra, Germany, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Croatia, Chile, Cyprus, South Korea, Denmark, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, Norway, New Zealand, Netherlands, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, San Marino, Serbia, Switzerland, Sweden, Singapore, and Uruguay.
- Real estate investment of USD 200,000
- Fixed-term deposit of USD 200,000
- Employment by a company in Panama for residence for labor reasons
Benefits of Panama Residency
The Panama Residence by Investment program offers several key benefits, including the right to live, work, and study in Panama. Residents gain access to the Central, South, and North American markets and the program extends to spouses, children under 18, single full-time students aged 18-25 with no children, children of any age with physical or mental disabilities, and parents of any age.
Path to Citizenship
After five years of holding permanent residency, investors are eligible to apply for Panamanian citizenship. Citizens of certain Latin American countries and Spain may qualify for citizenship after a shorter period, ranging from one to three years.
The Panama Qualified Investor Visa provides a relatively straightforward and efficient pathway to residency and, citizenship for those seeking to invest in a stable and growing Latin American economy.
