Paper Park: New Recreation Spot in Cantonment Set to Open in January
Construction is ongoing at a new park called “Paper Park” on a 68-acre site in Cantonment. This site was formerly the International Paper golf course. The park is expected to open in January.
In April, Escambia County leased the property located at Highway 29 and Muscogee Road for park development. Walking trails and playgrounds have already been built. On a recent visit, several families were enjoying the playground.
The Escambia County Commission approved a plan to purchase a play structure and a 704-square-foot recreational shelter, which includes tables. The total cost for the GameTime equipment is $369,775.76, covering both purchase and installation. Once completed, the recreational area will be free for public use during daylight hours.
How will Paper Park contribute to community engagement in Cantonment?
Interview with John Smith, Parks Development Specialist
News Directory 3: Thank you for joining us today, John. Can you tell us about the vision behind the development of Paper Park on the former International Paper golf course site?
John Smith: Thank you for having me. The vision for Paper Park is to transform this 68-acre area into a vibrant community space that promotes outdoor recreation and family engagement. We want to create an environment where residents can enjoy nature, exercise, and spend quality time together. The park’s name, “Paper Park,” pays homage to its history while signaling a fresh start for the community.
News Directory 3: What specific features are currently underway in the park’s development?
John Smith: As of now, we have already completed the construction of walking trails and playgrounds. Families have started to use these facilities, which is encouraging to see. Additionally, we are in the process of installing a large play structure and a 704-square-foot recreational shelter that will feature tables for picnicking and gatherings.
News Directory 3: The Escambia County Commission approved a significant investment for park equipment. Can you explain the importance of this funding?
John Smith: Absolutely. The total investment of $369,775.76 for GameTime play equipment is vital because it ensures that we provide high-quality recreational facilities for the community. This equipment will not only enhance the children’s play experience but also encourage physical activity. With the park being free for public use during daylight hours, we aim to make it accessible to everyone in the community.
News Directory 3: How does funding play a role in the park’s development, particularly from the Cantonment Community Redevelopment Agency?
John Smith: The funding from the Cantonment CRA is instrumental for this project. It allows us to cover initial costs and ensures ongoing maintenance and development. Additionally, the lease agreement with Escambia County, which starts at a fee of $5,000 and gradually increases, reflects a commitment to sustainability and investment in the area’s recreational infrastructure.
News Directory 3: Since the Champion Golf Club course has been closed since 2017, what is the anticipated impact of Paper Park on the community?
John Smith: The community has been looking for new recreational spaces after the closure of the golf course. Paper Park will fill that gap by providing diverse outdoor activities. We believe it will become a hub for families, community events, and outdoor fitness, ultimately enriching the quality of life in Cantonment.
News Directory 3: When can the community expect to fully enjoy the park’s offerings?
John Smith: We anticipate that Paper Park will open its doors in January. Our goal is to have everything completed and ready for families to enjoy a range of activities, from playing on the new structures to walking on the scenic trails.
News Directory 3: Thank you for your insights, John. We look forward to seeing Paper Park come to life!
John Smith: Thank you for covering this important project!
Funding for this project comes from the Cantonment Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). According to the lease agreement, Escambia County will pay an initial lease fee of $5,000. This amount will increase by 5% annually, reaching $6,077.53 by the fifth year.
The Champion Golf Club course has been closed since 2017.
