JAYAPURA,Indonesia‍ – The Papua Health Office reports that 11,644 women in Papua have been infected with HIV/AIDS,a virus that compromises the body’s immune system.

Dr. Ari Pongtiku,head of the Papua health Office,told Antara news agency Friday that the number of women with HIV/AIDS⁢ exceeds the 9,463 men infected. The gender of ⁢22 individuals with the virus is unkown.

As of December 2024, a total of 21,129 HIV/AIDS ⁣cases have been recorded across nine districts and cities in Papua‍ Province.

Health officials project an increase in HIV/AIDS cases and ⁢emphasize the need for a multi-sector approach to address the issue. Dr. Pongtiku urged those infected to adhere to their antiretroviral (ARV) drug regimens.

“regular ARV intake is crucial for boosting the patient’s immunity,” Dr. Pongtiku stated, noting that the ‍medication is provided free ⁤of charge at local health centers (Puskesmas) and hospitals.
