The event will now feature 32 medal opportunities, an increase from the 31 events at Paris 2024. This includes a new WS1 women’s event for athletes with the most significant wheelchair impairment.
This adjustment marks a historic moment. For the first time,Para table tennis will achieve equal representation, with the same number of male and female athletes competing. the LA28 Paralympic Games will include 15 men’s events, 15 women’s events, and two mixed events, showcasing the sport’s commitment to gender equality and inclusion.
The LA28 organizers have placed Para table tennis, along with wheelchair fencing, Para judo, Para taekwondo, and boccia, at the heart of the action. These sports will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in downtown LA, creating a dynamic atmosphere for athletes and fans alike. The downtown location promises to put Para table tennis in the spotlight during what is expected to be the largest and most gender-balanced Paralympics ever, with 4,480 athletes.
The multi-sport venue aims to enhance the experience for everyone involved, with accessibility as a key consideration in the venue design. Athletes across all sports will be housed together at the Paralympic Village on UCLA’s campus for the first time since Rio 2016.
The addition of a medal event reflects the growing popularity of Para table tennis within the Paralympic movement. The sport is set to build on its success in Paris, where it generated the third-most airtime, with 615 hours of coverage, trailing only Para athletics and Para swimming. The LA28 Paralympic Games will take place from Aug. 15-27, 2028.
