Parabola Magazine Shuts Down After 50 Years

After nearly five decades of exploring spirituality, literary arts, and the human condition, Parabola magazine has ceased publication. The magazine, known for its deep reflections on human existence, faced insurmountable financial challenges in the modern publishing landscape.
Founded in 1976, Parabola offered readers a unique blend of cosmic art and insightful writing. Its pages featured contributions from notable figures such as Alan Watts and Mary Oliver, covering topics ranging from personal essays on spirituality to interviews with thought leaders like Ram Dass. the magazine provided a space for reflection and meaning-making.
Publisher and editor Jeff Zaleski said Parabola remained consistent throughout its history, focusing on fundamental human questions from various spiritual perspectives.He cited themes such as the hero, God, and life after death as examples. The magazine’s first issue was titled “The Hero,” and its last, “The Mystery of Time.”
The magazine’s origins trace back to discussions between founder Dorothea Dooling and her friends, including Pamela Travers, author of the Mary Poppins books, and photographer Minor White. the teachings of philosopher and mystic G.I. Gurdjieff also influenced the project.
while not a direct product of Gurdjieff’s teachings, Zaleski noted the influence, explaining that Parabola embraced the customary perspective that life has meaning and that multiple paths lead to enlightenment and salvation.
In a Facebook post announcing the closure,the publication cited “financial challenges posed by today’s publishing environment” as the reason for ceasing operations. The post expressed gratitude to readers and supporters for their devotion over the past 50 years.
“We are immensely grateful to our readers and supporters, surely among the most intelligent, thoughtful, and devoted any magazine has ever enjoyed,” read the post. “It has been a privilege to carry on this fifty-year conversation with you.”
Zaleski believes that honoring the human experience remains crucial,emphasizing the sacredness within humanity and the natural world. He said this sacredness, celebrated by spiritual traditions, stands apart from mechanical processes and algorithms.
Despite the regret surrounding the closure, Zaleski and the staff express gratitude for the possibility to have contributed to Parabola‘s legacy. He believes the magazine’s positive impact will endure.
