Due to rain caused by the approach of Typhoon No. 10, the Tokaido Shinkansen was suspended between Tokyo and Nagoya on August 30. At Nagoya Station, people were seen heading to Tokyo by express bus.
Typhoon No. 10 is expected to become a tropical depression on September 1st and approach the Tokai region on the 2nd.
The Tokaido Shinkansen suspended operations on both lines between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka from the first train on the 30th. Operations have since resumed between Nagoya and Shin-Osaka, but only about two Kodama trains per hour.
A long line of passengers had formed at the bus stop for express buses bound for Tokyo near Nagoya Station.
For those heading from Aichi to Tokyo:
“It was a concert at Tokyo Dome. I realized that the Shinkansen trains were going to be stopped, so people around me told me, ‘Maybe you can get there by bus?’ So I quickly booked a bus.”
Another person heading to Tokyo from Aichi:
“I was planning to fly from Haneda and take the Shinkansen to get there, but it wasn’t moving so I took the bus.”
A hotel in Nagoya Station said that while there has been no significant change in the number of guests staying at the hotel, restaurant reservations have fallen by more than 20% due to cancellations.
Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel representative:
“Immediately after the announcement yesterday of the planned suspension of Shinkansen services, we have seen a huge increase in cancellations of reservations. However, on the other hand, customers who were unable to return home have suddenly decided to stay overnight, which has resulted in an increase of about 10% in the number of customers checking in.”
