Paris Apartment Collapse Injures Dozens at Party
A partial collapse of an apartment in Paris’s 11th arrondissement injured at least 29 people during a party early Sunday morning, authorities said. One person is in critical condition, while 14 others sustained relatively minor injuries.
“As of the latest update from firefighters, there are 14 people in urgent condition and one person in absolute emergency. The latter was transported to the hospital,”
said the Paris prosecutor’s office Sunday morning, according to the Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The Paris Prefecture of Police reported one person in cardiac arrest was resuscitated and transported to the hospital in critical condition, and 16 others were taken to hospitals.
Paris firefighters were alerted shortly after midnight to the collapse of a fifth-floor apartment on Rue Amelot, which fell onto the apartment below.
145 Firefighters Mobilized
Initial assessments indicate the collapse was “structural” and not caused by a gas leak, officials said. Approximately 145 firefighters with 45 vehicles, along with numerous ambulances, responded to the scene. Safety architects from the Paris Prefecture of Police also were dispatched.
Authorities stated that the fourth floor was supported and inspected. “The building’s structure was not damaged by the floor collapse,” the Paris Prefecture of Police said. Two residents were relocated by the 11th arrondissement’s mayor’s office for the night, while other building residents found temporary shelter with friends and family. Adjacent buildings were evacuated during the rescue operation and residents were allowed to return around 4 a.m.
“An inquiry into the causes of the injuries has been opened.Investigations are ongoing,” the Paris prosecutor’s office said. The investigation has been assigned to the 11th arrondissement police station.
Rue Amelot was reopened to traffic Sunday morning.
