A Los Angeles judge has ruled that $625,000 in bonus payments made to executors of the Michael Jackson estate must be returned to the estate. The decision follows a legal challenge by the late musician’s daughter, Paris Jackson, who questioned the legitimacy of the payouts.

According to court documents filed on May 13, 2026, Judge Mitchell L. Beckloff sided with Paris Jackson, rejecting $625,000 in bonuses paid during the second half of 2018. These payments were issued to executors John Branca and John McClain, who used the funds to pay third-party law firms representing the estate.

The judge determined that the information provided did not support the conclusion that the bonus payments were just and reasonable. As a result of the ruling, the funds must be returned to the entity administering the singer’s capital, benefiting the primary heirs, including Paris Jackson, 29, and her siblings, Prince and Bigi Jackson.

In addition to the recovery of the funds, the court ruled that Paris Jackson is entitled to an award of reasonable attorneys' fees.

The legal dispute began in June 2025 when Paris Jackson filed an objection after the executors requested court approval for attorney compensation and costs related to the 2018 period. Jackson argued that the bonus payments lacked a sufficient explanation.

The scope of the challenge expanded in July 2025, when Jackson raised broader concerns regarding the accounting practices and delayed fee reports of the estate.

During an evidentiary hearing, executor John Branca testified that the estate experienced a historically successful year in 2018, attributing the financial gains to specific business transactions.

Branca and McClain maintained that the fees were standard within the industry and were justified by the significant amount of money generated for the estate during that timeframe.

However, legal representatives for Paris Jackson challenged the oversight capabilities of the executors. Her attorney argued that the irregular payments raise serious and substantial doubts about the ability of the executors... To effectively supervise the lawyers, further describing the payouts as wasteful six-figure gifts to themselves.

Paris Jackson expressed her concerns regarding the potential exploitation of the estate’s management structure.

current records suggest that a tight-knit and well-remunerated group of lawyers is exploiting the executors’ lack of oversight to divert money from the estate in plain sight

A spokesperson for Paris Jackson described the judge’s ruling as a massive win for her. The spokesperson stated that Jackson has remained focused on the best interests of her family and that the decision provides the transparency and accountability the family has sought for years.
