Iconic Indian biscuit brand Parle-G is investing in grassroots sports, teaming up with the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) to sponsor the Wrestling Champions Programme. This initiative aims to identify and develop wrestling talent, particularly in Haryana.
The collaboration between Parle-G and IIS spans campuses in Vijayanagar and Hisar. Earlier this year, they jointly hosted the Haryana Dangal Championship in Hisar, marking the first wrestling competition of its kind hosted by IIS in the state. The event drew significant local interest and is seen as a crucial step in strengthening Haryana’s wrestling culture.
Haryana has historically contributed the most medals to India in multi-sport events. The Wrestling Champions programme seeks to build upon this legacy. Sakshi Malik, a Haryanvi wrestler, secured IIS’s first Olympic medal with a bronze at the 2016 rio Games.
The Parle-G and IIS collaboration will provide extensive training to more than 150 freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers across both centers. This includes access to Asia’s only BASES accredited Sports Science Laboratory and technical support from United World Wrestling.
Mayank Shah, vice president of Parle Products, said wrestling symbolizes India’s “grit and grassroots glory.” He added that Parle-G hopes to be part of every wrestler’s journey to greatness, mirroring its role in Indian childhoods.
Manisha Malhotra, president of IIS, said the partnership unites two icons of Indian culture, strengthening grassroots engagement and enhancing pathways for future Olympic champions, with a focus on Haryana.
What’s next
Parle-G’s involvement signals a growing trend of established Indian companies investing in both high-performance and grassroots sports. IIS views this collaboration as part of a broader effort to attract private sector involvement and create lasting, athlete-centered programs.
