The celestial alignment will cause the lunar surface to glow in a striking copper-red or rust-red shade, creating a visual effect that astronomers often refer to as a nearly “Blood Moon.” According to an explanation by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) published by Kompas.com, the reddish tint occurs because our planet blocks the majority of direct sunlight from reaching the lunar surface, filtering the remaining light through a thick layer of Earth’s atmosphere. NASA describes the phenomenon as projecting every sunrise and sunset across the globe onto the Moon.

Billions of people across multiple continents will be able to observe the eclipse, with the best viewing conditions concentrated in North America and South America, where observers can watch the entire sequence from start to finish, according to Space.com reporting cited by Kompas.com. For observers on the East Coast of the United States, such as New York, the peak of the eclipse will occur around midnight local time. Meanwhile, residents in Western Europe and parts of Africa will view the event in the early morning hours just before dawn on August 28, when the Moon hangs low in the western sky.

During this peak moment, the shadow of Earth covers nearly all of the lunar disk, leaving only a tiny sliver along the edge exposed to direct sunlight.
