Thousands of runners gathered in Tempe, Arizona, on Saturday, April 11, 2026, for Pat’s Run, a 4.2-mile race held to honor the life and legacy of former NFL player and Army Ranger Pat Tillman.
The annual event concluded inside the football stadium at Arizona State University, where Tillman previously played. Fifty Tillman Scholars participated as corral leaders, assisting runners across the final 50 yards of turf to reach the finish line.
Collegiate and Academic Achievements
Pat Tillman attended Arizona State University from 1994 to 1998 on a football scholarship. Playing as a linebacker for the Sun Devils, Tillman was known for his intense effort, which helped lead the team to the 1997 Rose Bowl following an undefeated regular season.
Tillman’s commitment extended to his academics, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from the W.P. Carey School of Business. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in three and a half years.
His collegiate honors included three consecutive selections to the Pac-10 All-Academic Football Team and a 1st Team Academic All-American honor. He was also awarded the NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.
Professional Career and Military Enlistment
Following his time at Arizona State, Tillman entered the National Football League (NFL). He played for the Arizona Cardinals from 1998 to 2001, where he served as a safety.

In May 2002, in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, Tillman left his professional sports career to enlist in the United States Army Special Operations.
He served with the 2nd Ranger Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment, deploying to both Iraq and Afghanistan.

He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Corporal. For his service and bravery, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Early Life and Foundations
Born on November 6, 1976, in San Jose, California, Tillman was the eldest of three brothers. He attended Leland High School from 1990 to 1994.
Despite being told by coaches that he was too small to play football, Tillman led his high school team to a Central Coast Division I Football Championship through determination and work ethic.
A Continuing Legacy
The legacy of Pat Tillman is maintained through the Pat Tillman Foundation and the annual Pat’s Run event in Tempe. The foundation focuses on honoring his memory by supporting scholars who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to service.
The race serves as a way for the community and Tillman Scholars to connect while commemorating the life of a man who transitioned from professional athletics to military service.
