Origins and Early Challenges
The National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA) emerged from the personal struggle of Lynne Matallana, who lived with chronic pain for most of her life.Following fertility surgery in her thirties, Matallana experienced a cluster of persistent and unusual symptoms. After a frustrating search for answers, consulting 37 different doctors, she received a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues according to the Mayo Clinic.
In 1995,Matallana,along with seven other individuals, founded the NFA. Recognizing the need for greater awareness and research, the fledgling organization instantly embarked on an enterprising project: a national conference. “I don’t know what made me think that I could do this, but we invited 30 of the top fibromyalgia and pain researchers from around the world and held it at a hotel at universal Studios in Los Angeles,” Matallana recounts. The conference, held in 1996, drew over 600 patients and 275 healthcare providers, including participation from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, which offered continuing medical education credits.
A Landmark Conference and Growing Recognition
The 1996 conference marked a pivotal moment in the fight for fibromyalgia recognition. it was the first large-scale gathering dedicated to the condition, bringing together patients, researchers, and medical professionals. This event significantly raised the profile of the NFA and demonstrated Matallana’s commitment to building a robust advocacy organization. “I think the public realized that I was serious about building an organization that was going to spread awareness and help people,” Matallana stated. As of December 10, 2025, the NFA has celebrated its 28th anniversary, continuing its mission to improve the lives of those affected by fibromyalgia.
Understanding Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a complex chronic condition that affects millions of people worldwide. While the exact cause remains unknown, it’s believed to involve a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Symptoms can vary widely in severity and presentation, making diagnosis challenging. Common symptoms include:
- Widespread pain
- Fatigue
- Sleep disturbances
- Cognitive difficulties (“fibro fog”)
- Mood disorders (anxiety, depression)
Currently, there is no cure for fibromyalgia, but a variety of treatments can definitely help manage symptoms. These include medication, physical therapy, exercise, and lifestyle modifications. The NFA plays a crucial role in connecting patients with resources and advocating for improved access to care.
