Patients Choose Less Treatment, More Quality of Life
tailoring Cancer Care: Study Shows Benefits of Holistic Approach for Older Adults
A new study from the University of Groningen Medical Center (UMCG) suggests that a more holistic approach to cancer treatment for older adults can lead to better outcomes and fewer complications.
the research, which followed 184 elderly patients with malignant tumors, found that incorporating a patient’s overall well-being into treatment decisions can be highly beneficial.
Traditionally, cancer treatment plans focus primarily on the tumor itself. However, this study took a different approach. Along with standard medical evaluations, each patient participated in a detailed conversation with a nurse about their individual vulnerabilities and needs.
These conversations explored various aspects of the patient’s life, including their medical history, lifestyle, living situation, personal goals, and expectations for treatment. This information was then discussed by a multidisciplinary team consisting of oncologists, nurses, and geriatricians.
The team then developed a treatment recommendation, which was compared to a purely medically-driven plan.
Surprisingly, 25% of patients received a less intensive treatment plan than they would have under the customary model.
“What’s remarkable is that the mortality rate in the first year for these patients was no higher than for those who received the more aggressive treatment,” said [Insert Name], lead researcher on the study. “Moreover, they experienced fewer complications and shorter hospital stays.”
This research highlights the importance of considering the whole person when making treatment decisions for older cancer patients. By taking a more holistic approach, healthcare providers can potentially improve quality of life and outcomes for this vulnerable population.
