Audra McDonald Addresses Patti LuPone Feud Claims
Updated May 29, 2025
Broadway star Audra McDonald says she is puzzled by Patti LuPone’s recent suggestion of a feud between them. McDonald addressed the situation during an interview with Gayle King for “CBS sunday Mornings.”
The question arose from a New Yorker profile of LuPone, in which the veteran performer stated McDonald was “not a friend.” LuPone also reacted coolly when asked about McDonald’s Tony award nomination for “gypsy,” a role LuPone herself previously won.

McDonald told King that she is unaware of any conflict.”If there’s a rift between us, I don’t know what it is,” McDonald said, adding that she hasn’t seen LuPone in over a decade.
Tension may have begun after McDonald appeared to support Kecia Lewis’s criticism of LuPone on Instagram last november. Lewis called out LuPone for “racially microaggressive” behavior after LuPone complained about the sound levels of “Hell’s Kitchen,” a musical playing next door to LuPone’s play,”The Roommate.”

The two actors have a history, having shared the stage in productions like “Sweeney Todd” and “Rise and Fall of the City of mahagonny.”
LuPone reportedly took issue with McDonald’s emoji response to Lewis’s video, feeling McDonald “should know better.”

LuPone addressed the noise complaints, stating that the stage manager of “The Roommate” advised her to seek assistance in reducing the sound from “hell’s Kitchen.” After the issue was resolved, LuPone sent flowers to the company as a thank you.
“If there’s a rift between us, I don’t know what it is indeed,”
