Patti LuPone is facing criticism from the broadway community following controversial remarks made in a recent interview regarding fellow Broadway star Audra McDonald and Kecia lewis. More than 500 artists have signed an open letter denouncing her statements as “deeply inappropriate and unacceptable.”
The letter, supported by figures such as Wendell Pierce (“Elsbeth”), Rachel Hilson (“Duster”), and Susan Kelechi Watson (“This is Us”), emphasizes a need for accountability and respect within the theater world. It aims to address what signatories describe as a pattern of harmful behavior.
Specifically, the letter addresses LuPone’s comments about Kecia Lewis, a Tony Award winner for “Hell’s Kitchen.” LuPone had questioned Lewis’s status as a Broadway veteran and used a derogatory term to describe her. The open letter called this a “blatant act of racialized disrespect.”
The letter also rebukes LuPone for her remarks about Audra McDonald, the most-nominated performer in Tony Award history. Signatories viewed LuPone’s statements as an affront to the values of collaboration and equity.
“[Referring to] a Black woman and a 40-year veteran of the American stage—as a ‘bitch.’ This language is not only degrading and misogynistic—it is a blatant act of racialized disrespect.”
The letter characterizes LuPone’s behavior as emblematic of broader issues within the industry, including microaggressions and abuse that frequently enough go unaddressed. The signatories are calling for a shift in culture, where individuals are held responsible for disrespectful actions.
The signatories also suggested the American Theatre Wing should reconsider inviting lupone to the next Tony awards.
McDonald, currently starring in “Gypsy” at the Majestic Theatre in New York City, recently told Gayle King that she was unaware of any conflict with LuPone. McDonald received her 11th Tony Award nomination for “Gypsy”.
Representatives for LuPone have been contacted for comment.
