PM: It was an absolute dream come true. “SNL” is such an institution, and too be invited to host was an incredible honor.The energy in Studio 8H is electric, and the cast and crew were so welcoming and supportive.
ND3: You tackled your heartthrob status head-on in your monologue, joking about those infamous nude scenes. Was that a conscious decision?
PM: [Laughs] Absolutely. I wanted to poke fun at myself a bit and show people that I don’t take myself too seriously. Plus, it’s always good to acknowledge the elephant in the room, right?
ND3: The “Gladiator II” sketch was a highlight of the night. How did that come about, and what was it like belting out a Broadway ballad in a toga?
PM: We had so much fun with that one! It was a collaborative effort with the writers, and they really let me unleash my inner Broadway star. [Laughs] The toga was surprisingly breezy, and I think the foam sword added a certain theatrical flair.
ND3: You’ve had a meteoric rise to fame, from “Normal People” to “Aftersun” and now “SNL.” What’s next for Paul Mescal?
PM: I’m just focusing on finding compelling stories and working with amazing people. I’m always up for a challenge,whether it’s independent films,theater,or maybe even another musical someday.
