A New Chapter for Irish Rowing
The Irish rowing team has announced its roster for the upcoming World Championships in Shanghai, China, from September 21-28. The team faces a unique set of challenges this year, navigating a post-Olympic landscape where many elite athletes are balancing their sporting commitments with burgeoning medical careers and further education. This has resulted in some notable absences, but also opportunities for emerging talent.
Key Absences: Olympic Champions Prioritize Medical Careers
Two of Ireland’s most decorated rowers, Paul O’Donovan and Daire Lynch, will not be competing at the World Championships. Both athletes are currently focusing on their medical studies. O’Donovan is reportedly working at the Mater Hospital, according to Rowing Ireland lead coach Dominic Casey, who spoke with RTÉ Radio One’s Morning Ireland. Casey acknowledged that this is a common situation for many of Ireland’s top rowers in the year following the Olympic Games, as they pursue professional and academic opportunities alongside their athletic endeavors.
“This year,a post Olympic year,is seen as a challenge,” casey stated.”All the elites were furthering their careers in college and working during the year so they were training part-time around their work and college. I think we’ll have to be realistic with our expectations for this World Championships.”
New Partnerships and Emerging Talent
Despite the absence of O’Donovan and Lynch, the Irish team remains competitive. Fintan McCarthy, O’Donovan’s former Olympic partner, will team up with Philip Doyle in the men’s double sculls. The women’s pair will see Tokyo Olympic medallist Emily Hegarty partner with double Olympian Aoife Casey.
Several athletes will be making their senior debuts, including Emma Waters, who will compete in the women’s four alongside Olympians Natalie Long and Imogen Magner, and Aisling Hayes, who previously debuted at the European Championships. Fiona Murtagh, a silver medallist at the European Championships in June, will compete in the women’s single sculls, while Konan Pazzaia will represent Ireland in the men’s single sculls.

The focus is on realistic expectations given the circumstances, but the spirit of Irish rowing remains undeterred.
