Shortly after,Wolf received a call from Kelly Bush Novak,Reubens’ longtime publicist and friend. Novak encouraged Reubens to record a final message specifically for the documentary. “She learned that he had not had an chance to address his arrests, and it was important for him to address that – and he did, the day before he died. Kelly recorded it,” Wolf revealed. This recording proved pivotal, offering a direct and personal reflection from Reubens himself.
Piecing Together the Puzzle
Hearing the final audio recording was a turning point for wolf. “I knew immediately what happened here was part of the story of this film,” he said. “And I went to work the next day.” The recording allowed wolf to contextualize Reubens’ life and death within the broader narrative of the documentary, adding a profound layer of understanding.The film doesn’t shy away from Reubens’ struggles, including his highly publicized 1991 arrest. The final message provided a crucial opportunity for reubens to address these events on his own terms, offering a sense of closure and honesty.

Wolf admits the experience has fundamentally changed his approach to filmmaking. “I woudl never make another documentary the same way again,” he stated. Though, he also emphasized that he couldn’t envision making this documentary any differently.
Wolf described the process as an immersion into Reubens’ intensely private world. “I’m trying to fully absorb the intensity to which people are reacting to this film emotionally. I knew I felt that way [making it],” he said. He continued, “But I also feel that there’s nothing to be done differently. He was an intense person. We had an intense relationship. What happened to him during his lifetime was intense. The way he died was intense. It’s intensity after intensity,and brilliance and genius on full display - and so my job was to make that come across so that you could experience it.”
The documentary aims to capture the full spectrum of Reubens’ personality – his brilliance, his vulnerability, and the complexities of his life. Wolf’s dedication to authenticity and his willingness to embrace the intensity of the story have resulted in a truly unforgettable film.
