Richard Gere’s former New Canaan,Connecticut mansion,a property steeped in history and celebrity ownership, has been demolished, igniting a public feud with a neighbor and raising questions about promises made regarding the estate’s future. The 1938 brick Colonial, once owned by both Gere and music legend Paul Simon, was recently torn down after being sold for $10.75 million last year.
From Historic Estate to Demolition Site: A Timeline of events
The saga began when Richard Gere and his wife, Alejandra Silva, purchased the sprawling 32-acre property from paul Simon in 2022. The couple initially expressed intentions to transform the land into a family farm, a vision they presented to local planning officials.
During a 2023 Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, Gere’s lawyer, David Rucci, reassured neighbors that the past property wouldn’t be converted into a commercial venture. “I have received phone calls from four or five neighbors… if this was going to be some sort of big commercial operation, and it’s really not,” Rucci stated, according to the New Canaan Advertiser. He emphasized the couple’s agricultural background and desire to raise their children with a connection to farming.”The owners… they both have grown up on farms, they’re very interested in farms and teaching their kids about farms… so this is really important to them.”
Though, those assurances proved hollow. After Gere and Silva moved to Spain, the property was sold to SBP Homes. In may, Hudson Valley House Parts was contracted to salvage historical elements from the building before its complete demolition. Now, only a cleared lot remains.
A Neighbor’s Bitter Outburst and lingering Resentment
The demolition has deeply upset at least one neighbor, Lulu, who took to Instagram to express her vehement disapproval and reveal a personal connection to the property. In a now-viral post, Lulu didn’t hold back her feelings, stating, “Just in case anyone was wondering if I still hate Richard Gere-I do!”
her post included a poignant and unsettling image of Gere overlaid with pictures of her deceased pets, accompanied by the caption: “I hope my dead pets buried in that back yard haunt you untill you descend into a slow and unrelenting madness.” This suggests a deeply personal loss and a belief that Gere disregarded the sentimental value of the land.
While the exact nature of Lulu’s relationship with the property and Gere remains unclear, her emotional response highlights the impact of the demolition on those who felt a connection to the estate’s history and character.
What’s Next for the New Canaan Property?
The future of the 32-acre parcel is currently unknown. SBP Homes has not yet publicly announced their plans for the land. Given the prime location and ample size of the property, speculation ranges from the construction of a new luxury estate to a potential subdivision.
The demolition of Richard Gere’s former mansion serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of historical properties and the importance of holding developers accountable to their promises. It also underscores the emotional connection people can have to land and the lasting impact of decisions made regarding its use.The story continues to unfold, and residents of New Canaan will be watching closely to see what rises from the rubble.
