Paula ⁢Abdul and Nigel Lythgoe ⁤Settle Sexual Assault Lawsuit

Grammy-winning singer and dancer paula Abdul has reached a settlement in her sexual assault lawsuit⁤ against British television producer‍ Nigel Lythgoe, bringing an end to a year-long⁣ legal battle.

Abdul, 62, first filed⁣ the lawsuit in October 2022, ⁢accusing Lythgoe of twice sexually assaulting ⁢her. The ‍alleged incidents took place during their time working together on popular television shows, including⁣ the‍ hit singing competition American Idol.

In ⁢a statement to⁤ the ⁢BBC, Abdul expressed‍ relief at⁣ the conclusion of the case.”I am grateful that this chapter has successfully come to a close and is now something‍ I can put ⁣behind me,” she said. ‍”This has⁢ been a long and hard-fought personal battle. I hope my experience can serve to ⁢inspire othre women facing similar struggles to overcome their own ⁤challenges with dignity and respect, so that they too⁤ can turn⁢ the page and begin a new⁣ chapter‍ of their lives.”

The terms of the settlement were not disclosed by‍ Abdul’s attorney, Melissa Eubanks.

Lythgoe, in his⁣ own ⁤statement, said, “We live in a troubling time where ‍a person is now automatically assumed⁤ to ⁤be guilty until proven innocent, a process that can take years. That ⁢is why, like Paula,I ⁤am glad to be able to put this behind me. I⁢ no the truth and that gives⁣ me great comfort.”

Abdul’s initial lawsuit detailed two‍ alleged assaults. The first allegedly occurred during their time on American idol, where Abdul served as a judge for the first eight seasons. She‍ claimed Lythgoe forcibly kissed⁤ her ⁣in a ⁤hotel elevator and grabbed her ‍genitals.

The second alleged incident took place in⁣ 2015 while they were both working on the dance ⁢competition show so You Think You Can dance. Abdul alleged ⁣Lythgoe assaulted her on the couch of his Los Angeles home after a work dinner. In October ⁢2023, Abdul filed an amended complaint, alleging a third assault by Lythgoe.

Lythgoe’s legal team countered Abdul’s claims by presenting text messages⁤ between the two that ‍they argued were friendly and inconsistent⁤ with her accusations.

Abdul’s⁢ legal team dismissed ‍Lythgoe’s defense as “classic victim shaming,” emphasizing the power⁤ imbalance between Lythgoe as a producer and abdul as⁤ a performer.

Court documents indicate the case was settled earlier this week, with ‍both parties ‍filing notice with LA County Superior court. The matter, which had been ⁢scheduled to go to trial next year, will now be dismissed.
