Portas Will Back Seguro in Presidential Runoff
Paulo Portas announced Sunday he will vote for António José Seguro in the second round of the presidential election, choosing what he called the “moderate candidate” and criticizing those who frame the race as a simple choice between left and right.
Speaking in his weekly commentary segment on TVI, the former CDS leader and minister said he would support the candidate best suited to unite the country and represent its best qualities – characteristics he doesn’t see in André ventura, leader of the Chega party. “It doesn’t seem to me at all that the other candidate, that man who shouts a lot, would unite anything as President,” Portas said. “As he only knows how to divide, to pit people against each other, to divide the nation into tribes, races, ethnicities, religious confessions. And that is the opposite of the presidential function.”
Portas acknowledged ideological differences with Seguro, a former secretary-general of the PS, but emphasized the importance of a president who can bridge divides. He stated he knew from the beginning who he would not vote for.
Ventura reacted to the growing support for Seguro, stating he anticipated this outcome.
