Pavement, the influential indie rock band, has surprised fans with their first new music in more than 25 years. The band released a cover of Jim Pepper’s “Witchitai-To,” marking their first recording as the 1999 EP, ’Major Leagues.’
While Pavement did reunite for a tour in 2022, playing “Witchitai-To” regularly, this marks their return to recording.The track, originally released in 1969 by Pepper’s band Everything Is Everything, was captured during a rehearsal for the reunion shows.
The release was foreshadowed in december when Scott kanneberg, also known as Spiral Stairs, mentioned a new Pavement song on the soundtrack to “Pavements,” a documentary about the band.
Directed by Alex Ross Perry, known for “Her Smell,” the film blends fact and fiction.It includes scenes of the band preparing for a museum exhibit and Perry’s efforts to create a jukebox musical and a Hollywood biopic. Joe Keery of “Stranger Things” is cast as frontman Stephen Malkmus, and Jason Schwartzman plays the band’s manager.
“Pavements” received a four-star rating, with Matthew Turner noting the film’s creative approach and Perry’s infectious enthusiasm.
The film is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in the United Kingdom and will be available for streaming on MUBI.
