The Emergency Department at Pavullo Hospital serves as a crucial medical resource for the extensive mountainous region it supports. A change in leadership has recently taken place, with February 6, 2026 marking a transition in the department’s direction. The incoming director emphasizes a commitment to continuity and maintaining high standards of patient care.

Andrea Sacchi, MD, is the new acting director of the Pavullo Emergency Department. He graduated with honors in 2014 from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Dr. Sacchi has been a medical director within the Intercompany Department of Emergency-Urgency since 2019, having obtained his specialization in the same year. His experience includes serving as an emergency and 118 admission doctor at the Pavullo Emergency Department, frequently providing support across all medical and emergency vehicles within the department. He also holds the position of medical director for Avap (Association of Public Assistance Volunteers) of Maranello and is a certified IRC instructor, qualified to teach courses on assisting traumatized patients.

Dr. Sacchi highlights the unique challenges presented by the region’s geography and climate. “Our mountain area…is territorially very vast and subject to many variables, from geographical distances to climatic conditions. A peripheral, delocalised area,” he explained. This necessitates a particularly careful approach to patient management, encompassing both acute cases and discharge planning. He stresses the importance of a robust network of care, actively working to strengthen integration with territorial medicine, including general practitioners and various care facilities, particularly those serving the growing elderly population.

The primary focus for Dr. Sacchi is maintaining the current level of service at the Emergency Department, despite its geographically isolated location. He acknowledges the significant legacy left by his predecessor, Giovanni Violi, MD, who led the department since 2021 before transitioning to a role as a general practitioner. The Pavullo Emergency Department handles approximately 17,000 patient visits annually. This workload is managed by a team of 13 physicians, both affiliated and employed, providing 24-hour coverage, mirroring the availability of the medical car service.

Dr. Sacchi recognizes the inherent complexities of managing an emergency department in a remote location. “Beyond the numbers of patients…the complexity of management is greater than in an emergency room equipped with various specialists, while we are only there on certain days and times, but we have learned to deal with everything independently.” This speaks to the adaptability and resourcefulness required of the medical team.

The Pavullo Hospital Emergency Department represents a significant investment in healthcare infrastructure for the region. A recent renovation, completed in December 2022, involved over 3.35 million euros in funding, including 3.2 million euros from the regional government and 100,000 euros from the local health authority and private donations. This investment underscores the commitment to providing accessible and high-quality emergency care to the mountain communities.

The change in leadership at the Pavullo Emergency Department comes amidst broader efforts to address healthcare challenges in the Emilia-Romagna region. Regional authorities are actively working to mitigate shortages of medical personnel, ensuring continued access to essential healthcare services. The appointment of Dr. Sacchi reflects a dedication to maintaining a strong and responsive emergency care system within the mountainous terrain.

The Emergency Department’s strategic importance lies in its role as a central point of reference for a large geographical area. Dr. Sacchi’s stated goal is to build upon the existing foundation of care, applying his expertise to consistently deliver a high standard of service to patients in need. This commitment to continuity and quality is paramount in ensuring the health and well-being of the communities served by the Pavullo Hospital.
