  • What are you doing by spending more than 400,000 yuan to invite the Paw Paw Team from Sichuan?

they are gas sniffing dogs

Run fast and efficiently

Sensitivity exceeds that of professional instruments

427 kilometers of pipelines to be inspected

1130 yuan for 1 kilometer

The first batch of 4 animals are on duty

There will be 8 more coming one after another

Have you ever heard of gas sniffing dogs? On the morning of November 5, many residents in Yuan Qizhai Community, Xi’an High-tech Zone, noticed curiously that a handsome dog had a clear goal and shuttled quickly. Whenever it found a yellow natural gas pipeline on the roadside, it would get excited. The ground jumped forward and smelled it.

Witness: If you see a yellow pipe, jump towards it

If something unusual is found, I will press it with my nose.

This dog’s name is Taotao. It is not an ordinary dog, but a professional gas sniffing dog that Xi’an Qinhua Gas Group hired from Sichuan with a “heavy sum of money”. Four of them came together to assist before the winter peak gas supply. Conduct a round of centralized inspections of city gas pipelines.

At around 10 a.m., a reporter from Dafeng News from Huashang Daily followed trainer Luo Fei from Sichuan and Qinhua Gas inspector Su Peng to inspect the underground natural gas pipelines in Yuanqizhai Community.

Yuan Qizhai Community is a huge urban village with rows of small buildings containing various facades and small vendors. It is a key gas safety inspection area.

Taotao is a medium-sized horse dog that works very hard and runs very fast. The trainer Luo Fei pulls it through the streets and alleys of the community. In addition to sniffing the smell of the ground, whenever he sees Taotao would rush up to the yellow natural gas pipeline exposed by the wall, sniff up and down the pipeline, and if he found anything unusual, he would press it with his nose and stand still.

“This is its signal, smelling the smell of natural gas odorizer.” Luo Fei told reporters that since natural gas is added with odorants during the production process, which is the smell of rotten eggs, sniffer dogs rely on capturing the odor in the air. Gas to determine whether there is a gas leak.

Immediately, the following inspector Su Peng stepped forward with a laser detector to check for leaks. “The value is 2.5ppm (one part per million), which means there is a little sign of air leakage. Just tighten the valve and it will be fine.” Su Peng said.

Comparison: Can detect very subtle air leaks

Laser detector cannot detect

Taotao continued to rush forward. When he still saw the yellow pipe or pressure regulating box on the side of the wall, he would go forward and smell it carefully. Next to a pipe, it stopped again. After testing, Su Peng found the value here. It is 3ppm. He told reporters that the alarm of the laser detector will not sound until it exceeds 20ppm, and the air leakage standard is reached. Instruments with such low values cannot detect it at all. According to the work process, after the gas sniffing dog finds an abnormality, the laser detector detects it again, and then registers and reports it to the maintenance department for timely processing.

During the inspection, Taotao was very dedicated, sometimes burying his head in sniffing, sometimes listening, and quickly letting go if there was no abnormality. He ran so fast all the way that reporters could not keep up with it. “This season is neither cold nor hot. Dogs are in the best working condition. I have to walk 20,000 to 30,000 steps with them every day.” Luo Fei said that Xi’an’s pipelines are in better condition and fewer abnormalities are found, so they conduct inspections It’s fast. When he stops midway, he will put a fluff ball that he likes in Taotao’s mouth, then pat his head and scratch his neck lovingly, and Taotao will stand quietly, waiting for new instructions.

“These dogs are particularly sensitive and can inspect much faster than humans. They can capture extremely weak air leaks in a few seconds, which is more sensitive than the instruments in my hand.” Su Peng said, he has been following the inspection team for the past few days. The dog then traveled around the large communities. When the dog discovered an abnormality in the pipeline, he used a laser detector to follow up and report the hidden dangers. The cooperation was very smooth. The four dogs took turns to inspect about 8 kilometers of pipelines every day. , walking is more than 20,000 steps.

“Working with them is very efficient and feels fresh.” Su Peng also gave special praise to Taotao. He is diligent and has good physical strength. One day he worked for 6 hours in a row and still showed no signs of slacking off.

Training: Dogs are taught to smell natural gas odorants from an early age

Two or three out of ten can be selected for work.

In order to allow reporters to see the performance of different gas sniffing dogs, Taotao was arranged to rest, and another Springer Spaniel named “Engineer” was put on duty. It was small and active, and basically buried its head and sniffed while working. , the speed is also very fast, but unlike Taotao, he is not very passionate when he sees the pipeline, and his physical strength is not as good as Taotao. He will scratch when he finds an abnormality. While working, I occasionally skip work to take a look at something I am interested in. It looks very cute.

According to Luo Fei, his company specializes in the business of gas sniffing dogs. It currently has more than 50 dogs and has worked in many cities in China. Taotao and Engineer are both veterans of the company. They started training at the base in 2018. They are both about 6 years old now.

“They are carefully selected two or three months after they are born, and then undergo strict training and pass the company’s assessment before they can officially take up the job.” Luo Fei said that the company mainly selects breeds with a sensitive sense of smell and moderate size, such as horse dogs. , Springer Spaniel, Beagle, Labrador, etc., have special training systems, allowing dogs to smell the smell of natural gas odorants from an early age to train their reactions, as well as requirements for physical strength, environmental adaptability and other aspects. , usually only two or three out of 10 can be PKed out. In addition to work, I usually train every day. When the sniffer dog finds something abnormal, it will make an alarm, usually lying down, sitting, standing, staring, or digging the soil with its paws. Each dog’s performance is different. At this time, the staff will use instruments to measure , you can accurately find the leakage point, which not only avoids wasted work, but also can complete the leakage plugging efficiently. Generally, there are four dogs in a group, and they are cared for and trained by trainers on a daily basis. The people who came to Xi’an this time are all members of Luo Fei’s group.

“Some dogs whose sense of smell is no longer sensitive, or whose physical strength is no longer enough, will be retired and adopted or retired at the company’s base.” Luo Fei said that the company currently considers the age of gas sniffing dogs to be 8 years old, and they will enter the retirement period after 8 years old. .

Mission: The dog comes to Xi’an for the third time

427 kilometers of pipelines to be inspected

According to reports, gas sniffing dogs have been specially trained and have an extremely sensitive sense of smell, which is 10,000 times that of humans and a thousand times higher than that of gas detectors. They can detect minor leaks keenly and accurately, making it faster and more effective. A gas leak was discovered. For complex road sections and remote areas such as grass and bushes, especially small spaces that inspection personnel cannot enter, sniffer dogs can take advantage of their flexibility and sensitivity to help inspection personnel complete preliminary inspections.

According to the staff of Xi’an Qinhua Gas Group, this is the third time that gas sniffing dogs have come to Xi’an. The first time was to secure venues during the 14th National Games, and the second time was in the first half of this year. The group used gas sniffing dogs to conduct trial inspections of some commercial complexes, old communities, etc. in the area. It took 6 days to complete a total of 104.3 Inspections on kilometers of pipelines, 678 valves and 412 pressure regulating boxes effectively detected hidden risk points. Therefore, during the safety inspection of the gas pipeline network before the peak gas supply this winter, gas sniffer dogs were once again introduced to assist in completing the inspection work, and an auxiliary inspection team of gas sniffer dogs was established, with each group equipped with 4 sniffer dogs. The average workload can reach about 8 kilometers, improving inspection efficiency.

This plan is to complete a total of 427.58 kilometers of inspection tasks for sub-high-pressure pipelines, regional pipelines in densely populated areas, and important traffic sections. The hired gas sniffing dogs are also expensive, costing 1,130 yuan per kilometer. All for the sake of urban gas safety. Currently, the first batch of 4 are on duty, and 8 more will arrive one after another. All inspections will be completed before the start of the heating season on November 15.
