Paws for a Cause: Kamiyama Town Hosts Heartwarming Animal Welfare Gathering to Promote Compassionate Pet Care
Animal Welfare Week: Promoting Compassion and Proper Care
Celebrating Animal Welfare Week in Kamiyama Town
September 20th to 26th marks Animal Welfare Week, a period dedicated to raising awareness about animal welfare and promoting proper care. To commemorate this occasion, an “Animal Welfare Gathering” was held in Kamiyama Town on the 23rd, offering families a unique opportunity to interact with dogs and cats.
Deepening Understanding of Animal Welfare
The event, held at the Prefectural Animal Protection and Management Center in Kamiyama Town, aimed to educate attendees about the importance of animal welfare and proper care. By interacting with dogs and cats, visitors gained a deeper understanding of the needs and emotions of these animals.
Hands-on Experience with Veterinary Care
In a special section of the event, children had the chance to learn about the work of a veterinarian by participating in a suturing surgery simulation using stuffed animals. This hands-on experience not only taught them about veterinary care but also sparked their interest in the field.
Success Stories and Challenges
The Prefectural Animal Protection and Management Center took in 786 dogs and cats in fiscal year 2023. Of these, over 60% were either returned to their owners or adopted by foster parents. However, 296 dogs and cats that could not be adopted due to health conditions or aggression were euthanized. Despite this, the center has seen a significant decrease in the number of animals being put down, with a reduction of about one-eighth compared to 10 years ago.
Working Towards Zero Put Downs
The center continues to promote adoptions and urge owners to care for their animals properly, with the ultimate goal of achieving zero put downs. By raising awareness about animal welfare and promoting compassion, we can work together to create a better world for animals.
