Montgomery County Animal Rescue Recovers After Barn Fire
Pawsibilities Animal rescue in Montgomery County is beginning to heal after a devastating barn fire claimed the lives of 15 cats,two rabbits,and a chicken. Several cats are still missing after the blaze that tore through the barn last Sunday.
samantha Carroll, who owns the animal rescue center and barn, said the barn served as a sanctuary for animals that were sick or not yet ready for adoption. The barn is located a few miles from the rescue’s main center in skippack Village.
Sher Carroll, Samantha’s mother, recounted the rapid spread of the fire. firefighters responded quickly, but the flames moved too fast. Volunteers have stepped up to help care for the animals at the animal rescue center.
According to Samantha Carroll, a dozen missing cats have been found unharmed. However, at least six remain unaccounted for. The animal rescue center is currently housing around 20 cats, with more in foster care.
A vigil and open house took place Saturday at the Skippack Village location, providing an chance for the community to show its support and reflect on the past week. Kimberly Sked, with Friends of Burlington County Animal Shelter, noted that Pawsibilities has been a reliable partner, assisting their New Jersey shelter on numerous occasions.
“Whenever we had cats that were FeLV positive or FIV positive, even if they weren’t super amiable, Samantha has always said yes to us. She’s never said no,” Sked said.
Sked added that the fire is a notable loss for the entire animal rescue community, given Pawsibilities’ history of collaboration. She recalled a time when Pawsibilities took in two black cats with cloudy eyes that were being overlooked at her shelter.
Carroll expressed gratitude for the community’s support, noting that people showed up to help even immediately after the fire. Despite the loss of the barn, she affirmed that the organization’s mission continues.
“Even Sunday, no one could get down our road,” she recalled. “the church next to us, we’re friends with the pastor there and they were texting me, ‘There’s people here.’ I’m like ‘Who?’ Just people who showed up and wanted to help.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
