PayPal to Expand PYUSD Stablecoin to Stellar Network
Updated June 15, 2025
PayPal is looking to broaden the reach of its PYUSD stablecoin by integrating it with the Stellar Network, a blockchain known for its speed and low costs. The PayPal stablecoin is already live on Ethereum and Solana. The proposed integration with Stellar is pending regulatory approval from the New York State Department of Financial Services.
The payments giant anticipates several advantages from adding Stellar to its network. these include faster and more affordable real-world payments, along with expanded use cases in commerce, remittances, and micro-financing. The integration would also provide access to Stellar’s extensive network, enhancing access through digital wallets and connections to various cash networks and local payment systems.
May Zabaneh, PayPal’s vice president for blockchain, cryptocurrency, and digital currency group, emphasized the importance of cross-border payments. She said digital currencies offer real-world value in this area, and collaboration with Stellar could further advance the technology, providing users with low-cost, fast international payments.
PayPal also highlighted the potential for enhanced liquidity and financing through payment Financing,or PayFi. This initiative aims to provide small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) with access to real-time working capital disbursed in PYUSD, addressing issues related to delayed receivables and pre-funding requirements.
Earlier this year, in April, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) concluded an inquiry into PayPal’s stablecoin. The SEC closed its examination, which began in November 2023 with a subpoena, without taking any enforcement action. PayPal cooperated with the request for documents related to the stablecoin’s launch and operations. The SEC’s decision not to pursue legal action suggests no significant issues were found with the token.
What’s next
Pending regulatory green light, the Stellar Network integration could substantially expand the utility of PayPal’s PYUSD stablecoin, notably in cross-border transactions and providing financial solutions for small businesses.
