Philippines and India Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership, Unlocking Billions in Investment and Cooperation
MANILA – Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has returned from a accomplished state visit to India, announcing the elevation of bilateral ties to a strategic partnership poised to bolster peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region and drive significant economic growth for both nations. the visit culminated in 18 business agreements worth USD146 million in realized investments and a potential USD5.8 billion in future opportunities.
“The elevation of our bilateral ties signals our mutual recognition of the complementarity and alignment of our interests, not only in bilateral matters but also in many regional and international issues of critical importance to both our countries,” President Marcos stated upon his arrival. “As strategic partners, the Philippines and India enter a new era of closer, multidimensional, and impactful engagement between our countries and our peoples.”
The agreements span crucial sectors including digital infrastructure, renewable energy, healthcare, manufacturing, and IT-BPM (data technology-business process management). These investments are projected to generate over 4,000 direct jobs, with considerable employment opportunities linked to large-scale infrastructure, manufacturing, and renewable energy projects.
A key focus of the partnership is workforce development. Commitments to digital upskilling totaling USD11 million will train approximately 26,120 filipinos in artificial intelligence (AI), digital technologies, and cybersecurity by 2026, equipping them for the demands of a future-ready workforce.During meetings with India’s leading business figures in New Delhi and Bengaluru, President Marcos showcased the Philippines’ economic strengths, skilled workforce, and investment potential. ”We showcased the strength of our economy,the talent of our people,and the opportunities that await those who choose to invest in the future of the Filipino nation,” he said.Beyond economic ties, the visit resulted in several cooperation agreements covering judicial matters, space, science and technology, defense and security, culture, and tourism.President Marcos described a “real meeting of the minds” with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with both leaders expressing commitment to collaborative development of the Philippines’ digital infrastructure and space cooperation.
To further strengthen people-to-people connections,Prime Minister modi announced the availability of free tourist e-visas for Filipinos,mirroring the Philippines’ recent implementation of a 14-day visa-free entry policy for Indian tourists. “These positive developments will help improve two-way tourism and stronger linkages between our two countries and peoples,” President marcos noted.
The President also took the possibility to express gratitude to the Filipino community in India for their contributions to the Philippine economy and their role in promoting Philippine culture abroad.
The strategic partnership signifies a deepening relationship between the Philippines and India, promising mutual benefits and contributing to a more secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
