The Room Next Door, the new film from Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, was praised at the Venice Film Festival, winning the Golden Lion last weekend, the event’s top prize. The film opens in Brazilian cinemas on October 24, as announced by Warner Bros. First, however, it is part of the international programming of the Rio Festival, a show that takes place between October 3 and 13 in Rio de Janeiro.
Starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, this is the filmmaker’s first feature film in English. The plot follows the rapprochement of two friends, a successful writer (Moore) and a war correspondent with terminal cancer (Swinton). With the film, Almodóvar discusses topics such as death, friendship, motherhood and the right to euthanasia.
The Golden Lion marked the director’s return to the Festival podium after 36 years. In 1988, she won best screenplay for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
