Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will host a summit of progressive world leaders in Barcelona on April 17 and 18, 2026, to counter the rise of right-wing politics and strengthen multilateral cooperation.
The summit, convened by Sánchez, will bring together approximately a dozen heads of state and government, including Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, Gustavo Petro of Colombia and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, to articulate a common progressive front against conservative trends exemplified by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Sánchez has positioned himself as a leading voice in the international progressive movement, particularly through his opposition to Trump-era policies and his advocacy for multilateralism. His stance has included refusing to agree to Trump’s demand that NATO members increase defense spending to five percent of GDP and publicly describing Israel’s military campaign in Gaza as a “genocide,” a position that has distinguished him among Western leaders.
