A great victory for Lula! What has happened in Brazil will happen in Spain. The global progressive comeback has just begun, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez posted on X on October 26, 2026, celebrating the re-election victory of Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Prime Minister Sánchez linked the Latin American election outcome directly to his own political prospects as he trails in polls before Spain’s November vote.
Political Reactions and Campaign Trail Fallout
Prime Minister Sánchez used a rally in Fuenlabrada on Saturday, October 17, 2026, to offer a public display of support for his wife, who is due to stand trial for influence-peddling and misappropriation of public funds. Standing on stage alongside her, the Socialist leader told the audience, Begoña is here with me today, before thanking her for being his partner and the mother of his daughters. Following allegations against his wife, Sánchez spent five days in April 2024 evaluating his future and pondering whether to remain in office.
Inflation and Wage Gaps in the Economy
Food prices have risen by 31.8 percent since December 2021, significantly higher than the overall cost of living increase of approximately 18 percent. Over the same timeframe, gross compensation per employee as measured by the European Central Bank has risen by 20.7 percent. This leaves food price inflation running 11.1 percentage points higher than wage growth, or 54 percent more. A report published on Friday by the Comisiones Obreras union revealed that house prices have surged 108 percent since 2013 while wages grew by around 30 percent, meaning property costs have climbed 3.6 times faster than pay. The biggest disparity between property value growth and salary increases was observed in Madrid, where real estate values climbed 4.2 times faster than earnings.
¡Gran victoria de @LulaOficial!Lo que ha pasado en Brasil, pasará en España.La remontada del progresismo global acaba de comenzar.
Housing Regulation and Rental Restrictions
In response to severe housing pressures, Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and the 2030 Agenda directed two holiday rental platforms to remove 8,318 listings. The Directorate-General for Consumer Affairs ruled the advertisements unlawful under the recently amended Urban Tenancies Act because they offered bookings for periods of less than 31 days while marketed as holiday rentals. Meanwhile, official figures from the Ministry of Housing show that housing construction lags far behind demographic demand. In the first half of the year, 40,136 private-sector homes were completed, a year-on-year increase of 0.8 percent compared to the same period in 2025. The Bank of Spain estimates that the national housing market faces a shortfall of at least 750,000 units.
Emergency Weather Alerts and Public Safety Measures
Severe weather disrupted regions across Spain as Storm Adam triggered red weather alerts for torrential rain and flooding issued by the state weather agency Aemet. The Balearic Islands regional government suspended classes in Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, while Valencia activated emergency level 2 and convened the Operational Coordination Centre. Valencia remains particularly sensitive after experiencing Spain’s deadliest floods in a generation in 2024. Units from Spain’s Military Emergency Unit joined local emergency responders in Oliva following reports of flooding. In the Madrid region, the regional government announced plans to fund and install 1,123 number-plate-recognition cameras across 564 locations in 142 municipalities with fewer than 20,000 residents to bolster traffic management and local police operations.

El Clásico Victory at Camp Nou
On the sports front, Real Madrid secured a 2-1 victory over La Liga leaders Barcelona on Sunday at Camp Nou. After Raphinha had levelled the score for the titleholders, Jose Mourinho’s side reclaimed the advantage when Kylian Mbappé netted twice—scoring first before halftime and later securing the winner in the dying moments to hand Barcelona their inaugural domestic loss of the season. The defeat marked Barcelona’s second straight defeat after losing on Tuesday against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Mourinho praised his squad’s execution after the match, telling reporters, My team had an extraordinary game, very organised, good concentration, with courage to play out from the back against a team that presses you a lot. The result leaves Real Madrid in third place, behind Atletico Madrid and Hansi Flick’s Barca.
