Barcelona Regains Reputation with 1-4 Win Over Girona in La Liga

Barcelona took a significant step forward in La Liga with a convincing 1-4 win over Girona in the fifth round of the competition. The match was marked by a dramatic turn of events in the first half, as a penalty kick awarded to Girona was overturned by the referee after a VAR review.

The incident occurred when Girona player Inago Martínez was deemed to have committed a handball in Barcelona’s penalty area. However, upon reviewing the play, the referee determined that the ball had actually come off the head of Martínez’s teammate, Bald, rather than Martínez himself.

Spanish newspaper Marca reported that the referee’s initial decision was overturned after a VAR review, which took approximately two to three minutes to complete. The delay sparked controversy in the Spanish press, with many questioning the length of time it took to make the decision.

Barcelona manager Michel declined to comment on the penalty kick or the decision to cancel it. Instead, he focused on his team’s performance, stating, “They interpreted it as a hand in a normal position and the ball came from one of our players.”

Match Highlights

Barcelona took a two-goal lead in the first half, thanks to goals from Lamine Gamal in the 30th and 37th minutes. The visitors strengthened their advantage in the second half with two more goals from Dani Olmo and Pedri in the 47th and 64th minutes.

Girona reduced the deficit in the 80th minute with a goal by substitute Christian Stuani after a pass from substitute Christian Porto. However, Barcelona held on for the win, despite being reduced to 10 men after Ferran Torres was sent off with a straight red card in the 86th minute.

La Liga Standings

With this victory, Barcelona increased their score to 15 points, taking the lead alone in La Liga. The team has achieved a full mark with 5 consecutive wins so far and moved 4 points clear of defending champions Real Madrid and Villarreal, who are tied on 11 points.
