Dan Muse is the new head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team announced Wednesday. He succeeds Mike Sullivan, who was dismissed in April after the Penguins missed the playoffs for the third straight season.

General Manager Kyle dubas highlighted muse’s player development skills and special teams coaching as key factors in the decision. Dubas said Muse’s ability to connect wiht players at all career stages set him apart.
Muse, 42, comes to Pittsburgh after serving as an assistant coach with the New York Rangers from 2023-25 and the nashville Predators from 2017-2020. Before his NHL experience,he coached the Yale Bulldogs,leading them to an NCAA championship in 2013. He also coached the USHL’s Chicago Steel to their first Clark cup title in 2017.
Muse’s NHL focus has been on special teams, particularly the penalty kill. His units consistently ranked among the league’s best with both the Rangers and Predators. The Penguins’ penalty kill ranked 15th last season.
Dubas emphasized Muse’s “elite results” in improving special teams. He said Muse’s attention to detail and vision made him the best choice to lead the team forward.
“What separated Dan was his ability to develop players,win at all levels where he has been a head coach and his consistent success coaching special teams in the NHL,” Dubas said.

The Penguins are in a retooling phase after missing the playoffs for three consecutive years. The core of sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris letang remains, but changes are underway as the team looks to return to contention.
